I started my work in the therapeutic world working with children as a therapeutic foster carer, completing the Introduction to Transactional Analsyis in 2006 and the Certificate in Therapeutic Fostering in 2007. I fostered between 1998 and 2011.
After this I worked with both children (not foster children) and their families and began to develop an interest in working with adults as I could see how problems from childhood experiences were not only impacting on their lives but also on the lives of their children.
I continued to study achieving a Diploma in Hypnotherapy in 2013 and an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling.
I continue to add extra skills and techniques through a variety of short courses.
I HAVE 2 KEY APPROACHES IN MY WORK;
PSYCHODYNAMIC - because I believe that although the past does not determine the future it does influence how we are today. I like this modality because it gives the client the opportunity to examine past experiences and notice repeating patterns. Recognising the patterns is the key to developing deeper self awareness and making effective changes. The unconscious mind plays a powerful part in our everyday experience, however current research in neuroscience supports the notion that this part of the brain has insurmountable plasticity giving us endless opportunities to redefine our perceptions of past experiences and thus exact new ways of responding to future events.
SOLUTION FOCUSSED- I BELIEVE THAT WE WERE ALL BORN WITH A PERFECT SENSE OF WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE. Our authentic selves got lost as we grew through our childhood experiences and we learned to adapt to survive in whatever circumstances we found ourselves. When we come to counselling we are often experiencing difficulties in our lives which we need answers to. In counselling we start on a journey to rediscover our authentic selves so that we may approach our future with a secure relationship with our self and live within our own integrity. I believe that everyone has the answers within and therefore the work done together - therapist and client is one of collaboration and exploration to rediscover that which the client already knows about themselves, that which has been hidden from view.
As a qualified hypnotherapist with Level 2 EFT training I also have a toolkit which is useful for certain specific problems ( e.g. smoking cessation) and can also be utilised when clients get stuck on stages of their journey. Hypnotherapy is excellent for creating a shift in outlook rapidly without having to go over troubling or traumatic pst experiences which may be too painful for the client to talk about.
