I work with both adults and adolescents face to face in Surrey and Dorset and worldwide online.
I started in the therapeutic world working with children as a therapeutic foster carer, completing the Introduction to Transactional Analsyis in 2006 and the Certificate in Therapeutic Fostering in 2007. I fostered over 20 children between 1998 and 2011 during which time I continued to complete short courses to develop my therapeutic skills. After this I worked with both children (not foster children) and their families through the Local Authority providing nurture groups in schools one to one work with older students. I also worked directly with parents to help them undertsand their children and manage their needs and behaviours. My interest in working with adults emerged from this experience. I began to see how their problems, very often rooted in the past, were not only impacting on their own lives but also on the lives of their children and I wanted to learn how to help people move away from repeating the past.
I gained my Diploma in Hypnotherapy in 2013 and an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling in 2015 qualifying me to work with adults. I maintain my DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certification. I am qualified to work with adults and adolescents.
I am dedicated to helping as many people as I can through my work as a counsellor.
I continue my education by taking a variety of courses and programs and reading widely. I am committed to adding to my therapeutic techniques and broadening my skills so I can offer a personalised approach to each client that trusts me with their unique story.
I HAVE 2 KEY APPROACHES IN MY WORK;
“psychodynamic approach includes all the theories in psychology that see human functioning based upon the interaction of drives and forces within the person, particularly unconscious, and between the different structures of the personality. “ Saul McLeod
I believe that the past does not determine the future but it does influence the present. I choose to work with this modality because it gives the client the opportunity to examine past experiences and notice repeating patterns. Recognising the patterns is key to developing deeper self awareness and making effective changes. The unconscious mind plays a powerful part in our everyday experience. Current research in neuroscience demonstrates clearly brain 'plasticity'. This ability to 'rewire' the brain provides endless opportunities to redefine our perceptions of past experiences and learn new ways of responding to future events.
“SFT is future-focused, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought clients to seek therapy.” Institute for Solution Focused Therapy
I BELIEVE THAT WE WERE ALL BORN WITH A PERFECT SENSE OF WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE. Eleanor Pool
As we grow through our childhood experiences, our authentic selves may be lost as we adapted to survive in the circumstances we found ourselves in.
When we come to therapy we are experiencing difficulties in our lives and looking for answers. In counselling we begin the journey to rediscover our authentic selves so we can approach our future with a secure, loving relationship with our SELF and live within our own integrity. I believe we have the answers within us and therefore the work done together - therapist and client, is one of exploration and collaboration.
In 2019 I developed a new programme to use with my clients. WALKEASE© allows clients the space to breathe, the opportunity to reconnect with their external environment (green therapy), and to feel their body.
This shift allows less internal focus and creates the freedom for tricky conversations to flow without the intensity that may be experienced in the counselling room.Therapy sessions are planned and timed, taking into account the emotional and physical ability of each client.
WALKEASE© is an excellent approach for many clients with varied therapeutic needs. Therapy begins with a face to face consultation in the counselling room. WALKEASE© may be introduced early in the process, or later when a relationship is firmly established. It is not a requirement of being in counselling.
When has been included as part of the counselling process I have noticed significant changes. I have observed the healing process accelerating, physical health improving, self esteem climbing and mood calming. The idea of filling an hour talking one to one in a small space can be daunting and off putting. The idea of talking and walking one to one may feel more comfortable.
Please contact me and we can talk about starting WALKEASE© therapy.
